A good friend of mine recently said to me, “I don’t really write much because I don’t have an audience like you do.”

I’m so glad she said this, because it made me say something that I’ve never said or realized I knew before.

My reply was: I don’t write because I have an audience, I have an audience because I write.

I immediately started scanning my brain trying to figure out if that’s something I’ve heard from someone else (it probably is) …but at the same time it’s just something I’ve learned from the past year of having this blog.

I didn’t start out with the intention of writing anything. I just wanted to post stupid pictures with funny captions, embed videos and browse other blogs. Then, some little thing I wrote got attention, so I wrote some more. It just built on itself and suddenly I had this blog where I write posts and people actually read them.

Also, just as a side note: I’ve never asked anyone to follow me.

I don’t mean that to sound cocky, and if you take it that way, well that’s something you should question yourself about, not me. I mean it only to be encouraging. You don’t need to beg for people to like you, liking yourself is enough… once you do, the people will come.

I started creating content that I LIKE. Stuff that makes me happy. Stuff I wanna talk about, create and put out in the world. If you go back to some of my first posts, they only have a note or two, some have zero. That was only a year ago.

That’s why I can never sit idly by and listen to a friend tell me that they can’t do what I’m doing because they aren’t already in my position. Everything I have, I’ve worked for. If you want anything bad enough, you make it happen. If you don’t know what you want, you putz around doing whatever for years until what you want is suddenly obvious. I’m pretty sure that’s how all great things come to fruition… trial and error, making mistakes but pressing forward, serendipity, synchronicity and letting everything you put out in the world come from your heart.

I could talk about creating from your heart and being a kind person, but I think Conan O’Brien summed it up best when he said:

All I ask of you is one thing: please don’t be cynical. I hate cynicism — it’s my least favorite quality and it doesn’t lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard, and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.

you go, coco.
