ME?! PRETTY?! WTF U SMOKIN?

A while back I was at my local diner (which I am now meaningless mayor of on Foursquare. Woo.) and I was talking to Justin about how this one friend of ours is REALLY gorgeous but doesn’t know it. I was saying how she’s always SO put together, to the point where she’ll ask me if she looks “ok” and my only response will be pure laughter. She always looks amazing! Then I just started saying how crazy it is to me that a lot of my friends are unaware of their best qualities.

Out of nowhere, Justin told me to close my eyes. I did. He then asked me to describe the diner we were sitting in. I started rapidly spouting off details. (I love games like these.) When I couldn’t list any more details, he started telling me all of the other things that were there that I had forgotten about.

I opened my eyes and looked around to confirm. Then, he said -and please allow me to paraphrase, as this was a few weeks ago- You come in here every day. You know this place pretty well, yet you missed about 50% of the details that are out in plain sight. Think about how many things about you other people see… and you don’t.

Well… fuck. I have actually never thought about that before.

Then he pointed to a cracked part of the tile on the floor. He said it was an imperfection that most people don’t even notice, but the people who own the diner probably notice it and keep meaning to fix it.

It’s just like how we all think various things are “wrong” with our physical appearance and/or personality. We mention these things as a way of deterring criticism from others… but we don’t realize that what we actually did was point them out. They hadn’t even noticed.

There are tons of qualities that make up every individual person. Different people will recognize different things in you. Just because you’ve forgotten some of the details doesn’t mean that other people don’t see and appreciate them.

You’re probably a lot more awesome than you give yourself credit for. Eh?
